In order to understand how to use BIM to complete the active production of steel structure, it is necessary for us to understand how the steel structure components that constitute the construction structure are made. First, the steel mill uses the hot rolling process (under normal circumstances) to make the raw material of steel structure. The structural steel maker buys the raw materials, cuts them up and makes them into beams and columns for construction according to machining drawings (instructions that describe in detail how each part of a steel structure should be made). The finished steel components are transported to the construction site and installed by the steel installers.

So where does the site construction drawing come from? It is the responsibility of the structural engineer to plan, analyze and verify the constructed structural structure and to create construction drawings documenting the structural plan. The structural drawings contain only the overall requirements for the fabrication of steel structures, i.e., a description of typical joints. The steel detail planner then uses these construction drawings and the overall node specification to plan the detailed steel components and detailed geometry, and to create a fabrication detail to instruct the steel fabricator exactly how to make each steel component during construction. Processing details include data standards, size, size, welding, bolt connection, surface treatment, coating requirements and other detailed information.

Construction of steel frame light plate steel structures includes only general instructions about the joints, while machining includes all the details required to make each steel structure component.

Steel structure planners generally use drawing software "craft" to create machining details or special steel structure planning software to create machining details. Autodesk Robobat RCAD is a solution that uses digital "crafting" models to create detailed maps of steel structures.

It should be noted that in construction projects, the number of detailed processing drawings is much greater than the number of construction drawings. For example, to document the steel structure plan for a 1,000-ton construction project (with 1,000-ton steel usage), approximately 70 to 80 construction drawings and 1,000 detailed processing drawings are required. The structural engineer needs to look at each drawing to verify that the information is consistent with the structure plan before releasing the process details to the fabrication stage.

Steel structure manufacturers generally use CNC machine tools to actively cut steel beams and make holes. Some manufacturers manually program CNC machines based on the information in the process details. Some other manufacturers use the above mentioned digital production model to actively program CNC machine tools.
